Hurricane Gustav - Are You Prepared?

Hurricane Gustav is barreling down on the US coast and should hit sometime around Monday morning. With all the talk on the television about people leaving the area, you will still see those who stick out the storm. Can you survive a category 3 or 4 hurricane? Do you have what's needed to maintain and sustain life during the time after with no power? How about living in a house that has 3 feet of water in it?

These are just a couple of questions you need to answer when thinking about riding the storm. If you are one of those individuals left to ride the storm, then you need to have a few things set up:

  • A generator to create your own power source
  • Fuel enough to last at least a week
  • Bottled water - Minimum of a gallon a day per person for the length your stay in these conditions
  • Canned and bagged food
  • Battery operated radio
  • Some form of communications link
  • A secondary plan if time last longer than your supplies

Its all about planning! We humans can survive some pretty serious situations when we prepare correctly. Hurricane Gustav has already taken several lives as it passes islands in its path. If you don't have to be in the path of the hurricane, leave!

Otherwise, be prepared to live primitively for at least a week and maybe even a month. Look at the conditions we still have in and around New Orleans. Three years later and we still have areas that have not been rebuilt. I believe its in the best interest of all who are located in the path of a hurricane to just pack your belongings and go inland. Wait until the storm has passed and then go back and clean up the mess.

Life is to precious to gamble on beating out a storm as big as Hurricane Gustav. By the way, when leaving, maintain patience as there are many millions more trying to leave as well. They too are trying to protect there family.

Good luck and god bless!
