Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA) has been around for a long time. I think it may be one of the original continual improvement programs that has been in safety for probably just as long. I picked up on it back in 2007 when I was studying leadership in college and it seemed to resonate with me. So much so that I went out and purchased the domain name PDC Safety knowing someday I’d be developing my own systems based around PDCA.
If you’ve been around the site, you may have notice the book Safetyology. That book has its base in PDCA. I am a firm believer that safety should be kept simple because it is simple to maintain at the core. When you start creating all these systems to track this and that, you begin to overcomplicate safety and people will begin to ignore it. That is the worst place you can find yourself in.
In the video above, I just got through the layout of PDCA to give you a better idea as to what goes into building a safety system. I truly is simple at the core. And if you keep it simple, you can bet it’ll be much easier to manage. Enjoy and I will see you in the next one…
